Thai Surprise

No this isn’t a story about my exploits with a lady boy in Bangkok. When I was driving around randomly in Toowoomba yesterday I spotted a corner shop that had a sign announcing genuine Thai food. It intrigued me so I made a mental note to return. I’m glad I did.

The shop called Karl’s Top Shop, is on the south-western corner of Norwood and Gowrie Streets.

The inside of the corner shop is small but has all the essentials you may need. Bread, milk, pet food and ciggies are all there. The takeaway fare is where Karl’s really shines. I ordered Pad Thai but apparently they had just run out of rice noodles. The cook, a lovely asian lady who I assumed is Karl’s wife, suggested the Chicken with cashew nuts instead. I agreed. Karl said it would be about 20 minutes. It was well worth the wait.

The meal was by far the best asian takeaway I have ever eaten. Full of fresh veggies and copious amounts of chicken. Usually when I order an asian dish with cashews in it, I can count the number of cashew nuts on one hand, but this meal had more cashews than any other ingredient in the dish. I’m definitely going to return here.

The prices are excellent as well. A serving of steamed rice is $1. That’s right one dollar. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The meal itself was only $9. Every meal is $9 except the beef dishes which are $10. There are an assortment of Thai dishes. Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Chicken with Cashew nuts, Sweet and Sour dishes, Ginger chicken stir fry and variety of curries. As I said rice is $1 and coconut rice is $2.

They also serve western takeaway with cheap prices too. $2.50 hot dogs, cheap burgers and chips. I haven’t yet tried these but I would not be surprised if they are as tasty as the Thai food.
